All This Water

All This Water  © Michael Tomlinson

We are made of all this water, ever flowing from the well
We’re no orphans here, we’re the sons and daughters
Of Life dreaming of herself
But we came the long way down from the mountain to the plain
Now we are raspy and bone dry
Time to remember how to surrender to the rain

I was young and filled with wonder, when I felt it start to fade
All my innocence, ah the boy I was, soon about to slip away
I went high up in a tree and I cried there like a child
Till a blue bird flew by me singing
“Can you remember how to surrender to the wild?”

I may never know the reason, never know why
Never going to figure it out
When I finally let go of everything I know
I feel a little lonesome, walk around lost
But that’s how I find my soul

I was on my way to see her, it was springtime in The South
About a mile or two from Chattanooga I began to harbor doubt
But she opened up her heart, took a breath and let it rain
Our reunion was so tender, it made me remember
How to surrender once again

I may never know the reason, never know why
Never going to figure it out
When I finally let go of everything I know
I feel a little lonesome, walk around lost
But that’s how I find my soul

I was dreaming by my window
When I woke up with the wind blowing in
The smell of August rain
And the way that it laughed on the leaves and the grass
And I laid there like a young kid
And I reveled in the rain and the wind
And in all I had not lost
But I never would’ve known it if I hadn’t come to walk
Through the world in a grateful way
No, I never would’ve known it if I hadn’t come to walk
Through the world in a grateful way

In a line of laughing people, I was standing at the fair
Then I looked around and I notice something
Was alive between us there
I saw everyone was me and that I was part of them
And for a moment I was rendered
Something so tender that I could surrender once again

I may never know the reason, never know why
Never going to figure it out
When I finally let go of everything I know
I feel a little lonesome, walk around lost
I walk and I walk and I walk and I walk
I walk till I find my soul
We are made of all this water . . .
